Some of these functions macOS can do in the background but other tasks might require the Terminal app or fishing around in the bowels of the system folder, trying to find log files and old caches that need to be thrown out to free up space. That’s not to say that Macs don’t need the occasional bit of upkeep and TLC, even if it’s just pruning large files, hunting for old files or purging unused space from the hard drive.
